I sometimes get that question.ย
On the surface, it makes sense. But...
Yes, there's no travel; I just show up for the session, so logically less effort?
But hereโs what people donโt see.
When I speak ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ป, Iโm the ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ.ย
I show up, step on stage, and deliver. Behind me? Your crew is running
When I speak ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐? Iโm still the presenter, but Iโm also the ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฌ, ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ง, ๐๐ฉ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฅ, and ๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ ๐ก.
I don't just speak into a webcam.
I literally run a show from my desk.
That means:
โข managing the full tech setup;
โข operating behind-the-scenes ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ณ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ to keep things visually engaging;
โข setting up ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐๐ฝ ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ๐, ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐, ๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด, (and if I can) ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐, ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ;ย
โข troubleshooting in real-time, mid-flow, if anything goes wrong
And when it comes to content, itโs not just about knowing what Iโll say.ย
I prep ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐น๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ than I would for an 'in person', because I'm putting on a live show; adapting the talk to ๐ต๐ฉ๐ข๐ต audience, ๐ต๐ฉ๐ข๐ต moment, as I go.
Itโs definitely not easier. Done properly, itโs a lot harder.
One of the toughest gigs Iโve done?ย
A 3am virtual keynote from London to a New Zealand conference. Beamed onto a giant screen, staring into a black box. No audience feed. No energy. Just a blinking green light. And I still had to deliver, like the room was buzzing.
But it ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฎ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ถ๐ผโ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ต ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ โ sometimes in the middle of the night.
Youโre not paying for location. Youโre paying for ๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐.ย
