Earlier this year, I spoke at theย Devon & Somerset Law Societyย ๐—”๐—ป๐—ป๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, and afterwards, four different people asked me a version of the same question:

I love that question. Not because Iโ€™m desperate to talk about myself, but because I donโ€™t usually start there. When I first started doing keynotes, Iโ€™d open with my CV, because I thought credibility mattered.ย

After a while, I realised it was entirely unnecessary. Even worse, it framed the whole presentation as:

So now, I try to let the ideas sell themselves; theyโ€™ll either resonate, or they wonโ€™t. Good (or practical) ideas that resonate donโ€™t need the CV, and weak ideas wonโ€™t suddenly land because of who I once was.

The experiences Iโ€™ve had should come through in the quality and applicability of what I have to say, not because of time served.

And that also means that when people come up to me afterwards and ask how I got into this, I know the message has somehow resonated.

So when it comes to my keynotes, itโ€™s less:

And more:

An interesting piece that encourages readers to think more carefully about how risk and human behaviour interact. Understanding why people make certain decisions can be just as important as understanding the technical risks themselves. For students studying psychology, economics, or related subjects, a TI 84 calculator online can also be a convenient tool when working with quantitative information.
